Happy 10ten day!
And happy 銭湯の日! What’s that? Well, October 10 = 10月10日 = 1010 = 1000 + 10 = せん + とう = 銭湯! And so Koto-ku—my favourite ward—kicked off a trend to make public baths free on October 10. So if you’re in Tokyo, go get yourself a free bath!
As for us, we’re celebrating with… a blog post. Well, it’s our first one ever, so it’s special to us, at least!
In September we released 10ten Japanese Reader 1.28.01, with a handful of fixes. First, the one I’m most proud of.
Fixing Fenix
As a company built by browser engineers, when browsers don’t work, we can just fix the browser!
Firefox for Android (also known as Fenix) had a bug that stopped extensions opening their settings pages. We hid 10ten’s settings button because it didn’t work, but that made the settings rather hard to find.
So, we just fixed Firefox, and now you can use the button again!
It took us a few years, but we finally got that button back. Please press it so we can justify all that work!
We also recently fixed a major regression in locale file handling in Safari extensions and made Firefox DevTools show synchronized extension storage.
To the top and beyond!
Recently, Web pages can put content above everything else using the so-called top layer. That could mean trouble for 10ten, however, because we want to make sure our popup is still on top of it all.
Being browser engineers, we knew this could cause trouble, but hadn’t heard of anyone encountering it until someone reported it on Spotify.
We were grateful for the excuse to fix it, so now 10ten’s popup is top of the pops!
Unfortunately, I think Spotify changed their layout, so I can’t take a screenshot showing this wonderful new capability—you’ll just have to trust me it works!
Bunpro links
We’ve shown WaniKani and Bunpro levels in dictionary entries for quite some time, but someone recently pointed out that only the WaniKani levels actually linked anywhere.
Bunpro levels now link to the matching page too. We also started regularly fetching fresh Bunpro data, so it’s now up to date!
N1 grammar actually being used in the wild!
𰻞𰻞麺
We’ve long handled weird characters like ㍿, ㌀, and 𠏹沢, but a few gaps meant we missed 𱁬 and 𰻞𰻞麺.
We can’t have our 10ten Japanese readers unable to order their noodles, so we quickly fixed that one!
Mmm, 𰻞𰻞麺. All those kanji strokes are making me hungry.
And much more, including…
- Fixing a bug in recent iOS versions that made the puck stop working
- Allowing you to look up longer entries like 東京ディズニーランド・ステーション駅
- Fixing some cases where we look up text far away from the cursor
- Fixing a regression in Firefox for Linux text areas
We’ve got lots more in the works, so hopefully we’ll write another blog post before the next 銭湯の日 10ten day!
